Expanding knowledge on other racial groups

I believe that it is very important to connect yourself, as a teacher, to not only your own culture but the culture and ethnicity of your students. It is very important to do this not only for your students, but also to open up communication between the teacher and the parents of the students. When school starts you should definitely take notice of the different racial and ethnic groups in your class. It is important to special notice to the different group that you may not know a lot about their culture. You should definitely research some of their cultures traditions and history. It is important to also bring what you learned and what you know about the different ethnicity's and race into your classroom. This week in class we learned about the series of Cinderella stories through the eyes of different ethnicity and races. This can be one example of how you can bring different cultures into the classroom through classic stories that are interpreted through different cultures and races.
One experience that I had recently was with the school visits. When talking about a Abbott schools and Non-Abbott schools I had a totally different picture in my head of what Abbott schools are. When you said that Abbott schools are inner-city schools I hate to say this but I pictured a more run down school and thought is was going to be chaotic trying to get into the school. I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at the Abbott school because the school was very nice and very well organized. The students in the class were very well behaved and for a first grade class very organized. The teacher was very passionate about her job and pushing her students to excel in their education. She would actually make up her own worksheets for the students because the work books that she was given the students found them to be to easy and not challenging enough. I definitely had the wrong picture in my head about what an Abbott school was and I am glad that I got to experience visiting one.
